PhD Studentship Opportunity at the University of Sheffield - Novel analytical methods for assessing local environments in multicomponent systems for nuclear applications

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate for an interdisciplinary project working on the application of scattering techniques for the study of multicomponent systems. Multi-component alloys (or High-entropy alloys), a relatively new class of material, are believed to derive their potentially beneficial properties [e.g. radiation damage tolerance] from local structural environments, such as local atomic configurations and displacements. The project will focus on the development of analytical methodologies, for the application of the total scattering technique and Reverse Monte Carlo methods, to elucidate local structure-property relationships in these materials. This will involve a mixture of experimentation (sample preparation, properties testing), characterisation (SEM, synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments) and computational work (data analysis, theoretical simulation). The project would suit a good Chemistry, Materials Science or Physics applicant.

The successful candidate will be part of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Advanced Metallic Systems; a partnership between industry partners and the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester and the I-Form Advanced Manufacturing Centre, Dublin. CDT students undertake a doctorate with an in-depth technical and professional skills training across a structured 4-year programme.

Informal enquires can be made to Dr Lewis Owen (lo250 at cam.ac.uk<mailto:lo250 at cam.ac.uk>)
